If you’ve asked for a quote, you’ve probably been asked “SLA or FDM?” Here’s how to decide.
FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) melts plastic filament and builds the part layer by layer. It’s strong, cost-effective and good for large parts.
Best for: functional prototypes, fixtures, jigs, enclosures, automotive test parts. Trade-offs: visible layer lines and lower fine detail.
SLA (Stereolithography) uses a laser to cure liquid resin. It gives very smooth surfaces and sharp detail.
Best for: jewellery patterns, small intricate parts, display models, dental and medical-style models, master patterns for casting. Trade-offs: resin parts can be more brittle, and cost per part is usually higher.
Quick comparison
| FDM | SLA | |
|---|---|---|
| Detail | Medium | Very high |
| Surface finish | Layer lines visible | Smooth |
| Strength | Good | Varies by resin |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Size | Larger parts | Small to medium |
How to choose
Need a strong test part quickly and cheaply? FDM. Need a presentation model or fine detail? SLA. Not sure? Send us your file, and we’ll recommend the process after reviewing it.
